As the first university of the Republic, Ankara University established the first Faculty of Science (1943), the first Physics Department (1943), the first Physics Engineering Department (1954), the first Accelerator Technologies Institute (2010) of the Republic period, and with the support of the State Planning Organization / Ministry of Development and Universities, has been the coordinator of all stages of the project on the Turkish Accelerator Center (THM), which is carried out in collaboration with the Turkish Accelerator Center (THM), starting from 1997, and brought the “Turkish Accelerator and Radiation Laboratory (TARLA)”, which was recommended within the scope of the project and established at Ankara University Gölbaşı Campus and gained the status of a National Center in 2020, to our country. Ankara University Accelerator Technologies Institute (HTE), whose establishment was proposed within the scope of the THM project, was established on 26.02.2010 and continued its operations in its own buildings, which were put into service on 09.05.2011. Between 2011 and 2020, HTE coordinated the installation of the ‘Electron Accelerator and Laser Facility (TARLA), supported by the Ministry of Development (later the Presidency of Strategy and Budget). In 2020, TARLA was granted National Laboratory status within the scope of Law No. 6550 and TARLA was affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Technology. Starting from 2020, the Accelerator Technologies Institute (https://hte.ankara.edu.tr/) continues within Ankara University and offers “Accelerator and Detector Technologies (Turkish)”, “Accelerator and Detector Technologies (English)” master’s degree and “Accelerator” and Detector Technologies PhD programs.
Ankara University has an important background, knowledge and infrastructure in particle physics, nuclear physics, particle accelerators and colliders and data analysis.
Ankara University CERN relations were maintained through personal contacts and visits of scientists from 1961, when Turkey became an observer member of CERN, until the early 1990s. The institutional representation of Ankara University at CERN started in 1997 with its membership in the ATLAS (A Torodial Large ApparatuS) Experiment within the framework of the cooperation protocol (MoU) signed with the support of TÜBİTAK. Ankara Üniversitesinin ATLAS deneyine katılımı süreci 1990’lı yıllarda Ankara Üniversitesi Fizik/Fizik Müh. Bölümlerinde sözleşmeli olarak görev yapan Prof. Dr. Saleh SULTANSOY ve Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Öğretim Üyesi merhum Prof. Dr. Engin ARIK (1948-2007) önderliğinde gerçekleşmiştir. ATLAS deneyi kapsamında çalışmalar Ankara Üniversitesi ATLAS Takım Lideri Prof. Dr. Orhan ÇAKIR yürütücülüğünde, Hızlandırıcı Teknolojileri Enstitüsü elemanlarından Prof. Dr. Hatice DURAN YILDIZ, Prof. Dr. İlkay TÜRK ÇAKIR, Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Ümit KAYA ve Fizik Bölümü elemanlarından Doç. Dr. Sinan KUDAY ve Arş. Gör. Ali Can CANBAY tarafından yürütülmektedir.
Ankara Üniversitesi 2005 yılında imzalanan Mutabakat Zaptı (MoU) çerçevesinde CERN CLIC (Compact LInear Collider) Projesinin, 2015 yılında imzalanan MoU’lar çerçevesinde ise CERN FCC (Future Circular Collider) ve CERN SHiP ( Search for Hidden Particles) Projelerinin üyesi olmuştur. Ankara Üniversitesi 2000’li yılların başından bu yana yürütülen CERN Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) projesinin de üyesidir. FCC Projesi ve CLIC projeleri kapsamında imzalanan Mutabakat Zaptı anlaşmaları (MoU’lar) 2022 yılında yenilenmiştir.
